💧When Too Much Water Becomes Dangerous: My Personal StoryBy Elizabeth Ledesma Hansen

We always hear how important it is to stay hydrated. Drink water! Drink more! Keep your body flushed and healthy! But what happens when we go too far?

I’m writing this not to scare anyone, but to wake you up. Because I was one of the people who learned the hard way — drinking too much water almost cost me my life.

My Emergency: Drowning from the Inside

Yes, it’s real. I ended up in the emergency room because I drank too much water. My body couldn’t handle it. I was constantly sipping water throughout the day — thinking I was doing something good — but little did I know, I was slowly drowning myself from the inside.

My lungs started to feel tight. I couldn’t breathe properly. It was like something was crushing my chest. I felt dizzy, weak, and confused. And when I got to the ER, the doctors told me I was experiencing a dangerous condition called water intoxication, or hyponatremia.

What Is Water Intoxication?

It happens when you drink so much water that the balance of electrolytes — especially sodium — in your blood gets diluted. Your cells start to swell, including the ones in your brain. In extreme cases, it can cause seizures, coma, and even death.

Too much water sounds harmless, but it’s not. It can cause your lungs to fill, your brain to swell, and your heart to struggle. I never thought something so simple could bring me so close to collapsing.

Warning Signs You’re Drinking Too Much Water

Please watch for:

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Headaches

  • Muscle cramps or spasms

  • Confusion or brain fog

  • Swelling, especially in the hands, feet, or face

  • Trouble breathing

What I’ve Learned (and What You Should Know)

Balance is everything. Yes, drink water — especially when you're active or it's hot outside. But don’t force it. Listen to your body. You don’t need to drink a gallon just because someone said so online.

Hydration is healthy — but overhydration can be deadly.

I’m lucky to be here today, and if my story can help just one person avoid what I went through, then sharing it is worth it.

Take Care of Your Body — the Smart Way

Water is life, yes. But too much of anything, even something as pure as water, can harm you. If you ever feel off, don’t ignore it. Ask questions. Trust your instincts.

And always remember: Your health isn’t just about what you do — it’s about what you balance.

With love and awareness,Elizabeth 💙
